CASE STUDY: WILD HORSE GOLF COURSE, CITY OF AMARILLO, TEXAS
When the city of Amarillo realized Ross Rogers Wild Horse Golf Course was experiencing a decline in the number of rounds played due to age of the facility, they hired Dallas-based Weibring-Wolfard Golf Design to renovate the course. An aging facility with an array of problems including: poor greens, drainage, irrigation, routing and no bunkers, the course was in major need of a tune-up.
The Weibring-Wolfard team consulted with all involved parties to create a master plan for renovation, which included accurate cost and time estimates for city budgeting purposes. Implementing their master plan, the design team created a player-friendly course that can be enjoyed by players of all skill level. Featuring quality putting greens, more enjoyable routing for players and excellent drainage and easy maintenance for the city, Wild Horse was able to increase green fees after the renovation increasing course revenue significantly.
The course has been rated best golf course in Amarillo by the Amarillo Globe News and the Peoples Survey, each year since its opening, as well as the number one economic value in Texas for courses $40.00 and under by The Dallas Morning News in February 2007. The Weibring-Wolfard Golf Design team utilized their master plan process to successfully renovate a public course with sound course economics that directly affect the bottom line.
“Our players enjoy our golf course much more now, not just because of the condition but, the challenges it presents in regard to its previous layout!”
